EXECUTION OF THE SECOND PHASE OF THE REVIEW AND
VERIFICATION
OF GEOGRAPHICAL TERMS (TOPONYMS)
Towards the end of January 2008, the second phase of the review and verification of geographical terms (toponyms) was realised within the framework of the Development of a fundamental national map for GIS of the Republic of Macedonia project. The Office for Protection of Cultural Heritage formed a commission for these activities, which included experts from the Institute of the Macedonian language „Krste Misirkov”.
A total of 8516 toponyms from 56 topographic maps were subject to verification in this phase (1:25000). The corrections included the errors made of the maps' transcription from the Serbian and Croatian language, and the mistakes made during the transliteration from Latin to Cyrillic and spelling mistakes.
It should be emphasised that within the framework of this project, the Cyrillic letters are used for the first time in the topographic maps (1:25000) and the linguistic influence from our surroundings was erased.
The protection, care and correct use of the toponyms, as a type of spiritual cultural heritage is regulated by the Law on protection of cultural heritage. |
